4-6 miles from Lincoln -- turn off at Junction 45 on Hwy 62

Nestled a couple of miles away from the main artery of Highway 62, Cane Hill is a charming historic village that was known for its educational and cultural achievements during the territorial and pioneer era and most of the 19th-century. Cane Hill was the home of the first public school in the state of Arkansas, the first library and the first Sunday school. The earliest factory-made furniture was from Cane Hill and the first steam mill of any importance in the state was constructed there.

During the Civil War, Cane Hill and the surrounding area were put to the torch by Union troops and local collaborators. During this massive destruction the college was burned to the ground. After the war it was rebuilt. Well preserved historic mansions and buildings, two Civil War battlefields, Cane Hill Cemetery, the Cane Hill College Museum and local shop offering Bar-B-Q make a trip to Cane Hill a rewarding, relaxing place to visit. Many Cane Hill buildings and sites are listed in the State and National Historical Registers.

Cane Hill College Museum:

The Cane Hill College Museum, located in the building of the old Cane Hill College, is open by appointment and has Open House days during the summer. The College was the first college in Arkansas to receive a charter (in 1852), but it had been in operation since 1834.
