Dr. Arthur McDanel Smith (first generation of Smith doctors) fathered three sons who also became doctors.  The first son, Dr. John Frank Smith, went to Tulane Medical School and completed a year of post doctoral studies in pathology at Touro Infirmary in New Orleans.

In the meantime the original two Smith Doctors had opened a small hospital, in 1923 the hospital was enlarged to thirty beds.  Three years later, the second generation of Smith Doctors began to join the staff, beginning with Dr. John Frank.
